Golubac – a cultural monument and a world attraction
Certainly the biggest attraction of the Silver Star cruise on the Danube awaits you at the very entrance to the Djerdap Gorge (The Iron Gates). The Golubac Town or Golubac is a medieval fortress, a cultural monument of exceptional importance. It is located on the right bank of the Danube and only 20 kilometers from Silver Lake.
The fortress dates back to 1335, was built in a fan-shaped manner and has an irregular base adapted to the steep terrain on which it lies. Nine towers of different shapes, which rise one above the other, are very well preserved and make Golubac one of the most picturesque places on the Danube. With its mighty ramparts, the city became the most important fortification on the Danube and often changed its masters. It was ruled by Serbs, Hungarians, Bulgarians and Turks.
There are many legends associated with Golubac, and according to one of them, in the main Hat Tower, which dominates the city, the Byzantine princess Helen was captured. To alleviate her grief and loneliness, the princess bred pigeons, after which the city was later named (golub). Tourists who pass through here often stop to observe the fortress that seems to emerge from the Danube.
From spring to autumn, visitors to Silver Lake and guests of the Danubia Park Hotel have the opportunity to visit this remarkable site during a cruise on the Silver Star boat.
