A weekend in Serbia: Silver Lake and Veliko Gradište – A Detailed Guide for Your Perfect Trip

09/07/2024

If you are in the mood for escaping the city, slowing down the pace and relaxing, on behalf of Brana's Divine World team I have an ideal suggestion for you. I guarantee that this is not an ordinary guide that you can come across in every online corner – this is a loving recommendation for the region where I spent my childhood and I still consider it the home I return to every time I get tired of the hustle and bustle of life imposed by big cities.

Here is an idea for you to spend a nice weekend in Serbia, more specifically at Silver Lake and in Veliko Gradište.

Day 1: Silver Lake

If you are thinking about a weekend trip in Serbia, and you have already visited the destinations in Vojvodina that we have recommended, you have probably considered Silver Lake as an option. In this article, I will try to show you the advantages of this choice.

Silver Lake is only an hour and a half’s drive from Belgrade. It was created in 1971 by damming the Danube backwater and since then it has been developing its tourist potential.

If you decide to visit the lake before the start of the summer season, you can treat yourself to a real weekend vacation that you deserve. Note: If you are going to Silver Lake before the official start of the season, make sure that all the places you would like to visit are open. If you wait for the season, I guarantee that at certain moments you will feel like you are at the seaside.

Where to stay

Silver Lake offers all kinds of accommodation, and it is up to you to decide which one suits you best, taking into account whether you are giving yourself a weekend break or a few days’ stay.

If you are a fan of modern accommodation and you can't do without a gym, massage, swimming pool and good food, I suggest the Danubia Park Hotel, which is part of the Silver Lake Resort. The hotel boasts a spa and fitness centre, a children's playroom and an open-air swimming pool complex. Although it is located away from the main promenade, it is very close to the lake and the Danube.

Where to go for a walk, where to have lunch and drink coffee at Silver Lake

After you have arrived at your chosen accommodation, leave all the superfluous things and walk along the main promenade next to the lake itself. The largest beach, below the old hotel, is called Požarevačka plaža (Pozarevac beach) and is known for its gradual and gentle slope when entering the water, i.e. a large shallow.

If the weather is nice, take off your shoes and step into the water, sometimes you don't need more for a perfect start to the day. On the beach you can rent pedal boats and change your perspective a bit – the view from the water to the shore does wonders for our brains. You can also drive to the opposite shore of the lake, which is not as tame and subordinate to tourists as the shore where there are hotels and restaurants. There is a high possibility that you will spot storks, kingfishers, dragonflies and even turtles. Just be careful, our national team rowers of different age categories train on the lake, so if you happen to be there during their preparations, do not enter their water space marked with buoys.

Speaking of the view from the water, on the other side of the dam that separates Silver Lake from the Danube, there is the starting point of the river tourist boat Silver Star, which sails the Danube to three destinations: to the Ram Fortress, the Golubac Fortress and to the confluence of the Pek and the Danube Rivers.

When you are wondering where to have lunch on Silver Lake or just want to have a coffee while having a perfect view of the lake, I recommend the “Sidro“ restaurant, which is also part of the Silver Lake Resort complex.

…

At Silver Lake, there is also a basketball camp for Miloš Teodosić's kids, called TEO4, which includes a resort and outdoor courts. Next to the resort there is a new sports hall designed for organizing various professional and recreational sports events.
